30 Affirmations That Changed How I Think
My parents told me to practice affirmations when I was young. I ignored them for years, the way you ignore most good advice until you're ready to actually receive it.
What finally made me ready was a book. Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is one of those reads that holds up a mirror whether you're prepared for it or not. I picked it up during a period when I was really trying to improve, and what it reflected back was a pattern I hadn't fully named yet: the way I talked to myself internally was working against me. Not catastrophically, not in any obvious way, but quietly and consistently. The inner voice running in the background was more critical than I'd realized, and it was affecting everything from my confidence to my ability to move toward what I actually wanted.
That's where I started. Affirmations.
The first attempt was unimpressive. I Googled "positive affirmations," wrote down a list of things that sounded reasonable, and then tried to say them out loud with genuine conviction. It fell flat immediately. Not because I didn't believe those things about myself on some level, but because the words felt borrowed. Generic. They had nothing to do with my specific life, my specific goals, or the specific version of myself I was trying to become. I couldn't feel them, and if you can't feel an affirmation, it's just a sentence.
So I went back and did the actual work. I kept what resonated, rewrote what didn't, and added lines that were specific to my mission, my values, and the things I was actively trying to call into my life. Two years later I still come back to some of these. They're embedded enough in my daily routine that I don't have to think about them anymore, which is the point. If you want to implement affirmations into your routine but struggle remembering to actually do it, try placing affirmation cards around your bathroom, mirror, and anywhere else you frequently look throughout the day. These cute affirmation cards are seven dollars on Amazon and are neutral colors to fit in with most interior design vibes nicely.
What I'm sharing below is the rough draft I wish someone had handed me when I started. These are yours to use as they are or rebuild entirely around your own life. The only two rules I'd suggest: keep every affirmation in the present tense, as if what you're affirming is already true, and only use positive language. Not "I am not anxious" but "I am calm." Not "I will stop doubting myself" but "I trust myself completely." The brain responds differently to these framings than most people expect, and the difference is noticeable.
Morning Affirmations
These are the ones I come back to most. What you say to yourself in the first few minutes of the day sets a tone that's surprisingly hard to shake. Even on the mornings when I don't entirely believe them, I say them anyway, because the repetition matters more than the feeling on any given day.
Today is incredible.
I am cultivating happiness and harnessing positive energy everywhere I go today.
Today, I choose greatness.
I conquer anything that life throws at me.
I am amazing.
Something wonderful is making its way to me today.
I can do this.
I deserve every bit of success I strive to have.
I am on the right path to my goals and I am more than worthy of my dreams.
I enrich the lives of my family and friends.
Gratitude Affirmations
Gratitude is the fastest way to shift your energy when you're in a low place. I've found that leading with thankfulness before asking for more creates a completely different internal state, and that state is a much better place to operate from throughout the day.
I am so happy and grateful for the life I have.
I feel abundantly blessed that I woke up today.
I am grateful for the chance to make my life better today.
I am so grateful for all of the people I have in my life.
I am so grateful for this healthy body I have that continues to get stronger every day.
I am so grateful for what I offer to the world and my ability to inspire others.
I am so thankful that the universe is working for my greater good.
I am grateful for the opportunity to grow my skills and share them with the world.
I am grateful for this moment and everything around me that feeds my senses.
I am grateful for this mind and body and that my soul gets to experience life in such an imaginative way.
General Affirmations
These are the ones that function less as a morning ritual and more as anchors I return to throughout the day, especially when I'm making decisions or feeling uncertain about the direction I'm moving in.
I trust the universe.
I am worthy enough to follow my dreams and manifest my desires.
Every day, I move toward my best life.
My intentions are clear.
What I am seeking is seeking me.
Everything works out for me perfectly.
I am worthy of receiving.
My mind is clear and focused.
Night Affirmations
The way you close the day matters just as much as how you open it. These are quieter, softer than the morning ones. They're not about pushing or achieving. They're about putting the day down and letting yourself rest without dragging unfinished business into sleep with you.
I am calm and peaceful.
I have done my best today.
I am grateful for this day's opportunities.
My mind is restful.
I am proud of myself.
Everything I did today leads to a better tomorrow.
My heart is grateful.
I am proud of my efforts.
I am safe.
I am filled with contentment.
Tomorrow is a new day full of possibilities.
I rejoice in what I have learned today.
These lists are a starting point, not a final answer. If you read through them and something doesn't land, that's useful information. It means that particular affirmation isn't connected to anything real for you yet, and it's worth asking why. The goal is to find the lines that make something in you respond, even slightly. Those are the ones to keep. The rest you rewrite until they do.
I started this practice because a book told me my inner voice needed work. Two years in, I'd say that was one of the better pieces of advice I took from it.
