The Power of SPF in Maintaining Youthful Skin

I have a friend named Michael who I consider my personal esthetician. He’s one of those people who has genuinely done the research on skincare, understands ingredients, knows what works and what’s marketing, and will tell you the truth about your routine whether you asked for it or not. I love him for it.

A few years ago Michael sat me down (metaphorically, over text) and gave me the SPF talk. I was spending real money on serums and moisturizers and doing absolutely nothing to protect any of it from the sun, which he informed me was essentially the skincare equivalent of leaving your car unlocked in a parking garage and wondering why things keep going missing.

He was right. He usually is when it comes to this stuff. So this post is the distilled version of what Michael has taught me about SPF, plus the two products we both stand behind completely. Consider him the expert and me the presenter.

Why SPF is a necessity— not just in summer

The short version: UV exposure accelerates aging. We’re talking dark spots, wrinkles, slower healing, uneven skin tone, and a compromised skin barrier. The longer you go without daily SPF, the more of that accumulates quietly, cumulatively, and mostly invisibly (until suddenly it isn’t).

The misconception heard most often is that SPF is a beach thing. Something you apply before a long day outside and forget about the rest of the year. In reality, UV rays are present year-round, through windows, on cloudy days, during your commute. If your skin is exposed to daylight at any level, it needs protection.

One more thing worth knowing: if your routine includes a retinoid (retinoin, retinol, anything in that family) you need SPF 50 minimum. Retinoids increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun significantly, which means skipping SPF while using one is actively counterproductive. You’re working against yourself.

Pro tip from Michael: Apply SPF at least 30 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply throughout the day if you’re outside for extended periods. It’s not a one-and-done application.

What to look for when you’re shopping

Start with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher — this means the product protects against both UVA and UVB rays, not just one. If you’re on retinoids or particularly concerned about photoaging, go straight to SPF 50. Beyond that, texture matters more than people realize. The best SPF is the one you’ll actually wear every day, which means finding a formula that doesn’t feel heavy, doesn’t pill under makeup, and doesn’t leave a white cast.

Here are the three Michael and I recommend without hesitation.

Paula’s Choice Daily Wrinkle Defense Mineral Sunscreen, SPF 30

Available on Amazon

$18

I stumbled upon this product by receiving it as a free gift from Paula’s Choice ages ago, and it has not been forgotten since. As someone who struggles with combination oily skin and a variety of other issues depending on the day, this sunscreen has proved to withstand it all. It’s a tinted face moisturizer that corrects naturally to match your skin tone and is mineral-based. Amazing. It’s incredible lightweight but somehow still manages to conceal redness and dark spots for me. The best part is it feels refreshing, which is not a feeling I thought I’d get from a sunscreen. So, this is my #1.

Algenist Sublime Defense Ultra Lightweight Fluid, SPF 50

SPF UV Defense Skincare Product Review

Available at Algenist.com

$28

Algenist built this around alguronic acid, derived from marine algae, which works to restore collagen and elastin production. The supporting cast includes echinacea and Japanese Green Tea extract for environmental protection, and Vitamin E to fight free radicals.

What makes it stand out practically is the texture. It’s genuinely weightless — no greasiness, residue, or white cast. And it absorbs fast enough to layer under makeup without any issues. It also works beautifully as a primer on its own, leaving a subtle dewy finish that Michael prefers to most dedicated primers he’s tried. Vegan and cruelty-free, too.

At $28, it’s the easiest yes in skincare.

Dr. Dennis Gross Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum, SPF 50

Available at drdennisgross.com

$42

This one is Michael’s recommendation for anyone dealing specifically with dark spots, uneven skin tone, or hyperpigmentation. It’s 100% mineral, meaning physical rather than chemical UV protection, and formulated with three forms of Vitamin C plus Vitamin E, which means it’s doing double duty: protecting from new sun damage while actively working on existing discoloration. If that’s a concern for you, the extra $14 over the Algenist is well spent.

SPF is the cheapest anti-aging investment you can make. Less expensive than the serums, less invasive than the treatments, and more effective than almost anything else you could add to your routine. The time to start is not when you start noticing sun damage— it’s now, before you do.

Thanks to Michael for being the kind of friend who will educate you about your skin barrier unprompted. Genuinely invaluable.
